Careful review and management of a company’s supplier costs can have a significant and direct impact upon their bottom-line and profitability. Over the last 10/15 years, companies have started to wake up to the importance of focusing on their Direct costs but this has not necessarily meant that Indirect cost management has received the same level of attention and this is in fact the easier of the two costs to manage and achieve immediate long term savings.
A company’s Indirect costs can be targeted by undertaking two initiatives simultaneously. They are :
Cost of supply targets those costs that an organisation is currently paying for their Indirect goods and services. It’s a simple approach, review the spend profile and vendor strategy and benchmark the prices. If these are found to be uncompetitive, we need go to market and undertake a structured tender process.
Demand management requires an open and accepting cost focused culture within an organisation of the changes proposed. Let’s consider an example, an organisation’s airline travel policy is business class for all flights, however, following a demand management review, the outcome is that business class can only be used for flights of more than 5 hours. Demand management is in fact one of the quickest ways to manage and reduce an organisation’s cost base, however, it is 100% dependent upon senior management’s support for the new cost culture environment.
What type of commodity costs should be targeted? It is those commodities associated with the running of a business behind the scenes. These costs can be segregated into the following commodity types :
Alti-Nav Consultant Services has extensive global experience across all these commodities gained over the last 25 years and has a team ready to support your organisation in investigating it’s cost base and ultimately maximizing its total profitability.
In addition to indirect sourcing, Alti-Nav has extensive experience in supporting companies to : Draft, publish and roll-out company-wide Supply & Demand Management Procurement procedures and policies. Review and roll-out company-wide procurement systems and tools.
